How To Get The Most Out Of Counseling

Working with a counselor is a big investment. At Santos Counseling PLLC, we consistently work on show for our clients and community. Take a look at the list below. You’ll find key ways that you can get the most out of counseling.

4 Ways To Get The Most Out Of Counseling

1. Ask Your Counselor For Homework

A typical counseling session lasts about 30 to 60 minutes. That is one hour out of a 24-hour day. I get that you are not awake for the entire 24 hours. I simply want you to consider communicating with your counselor about what additional work can take place out of the counseling session. 2. Sit With The Difficulty Feelings

When working with a counselor, you will find that there will be moments in which you face difficult feelings. This can take place during a conversation of a difficult life event. Such as when discussing trauma. Tremendous growth can occur when you allow yourself to sit with difficult feelings. A great counselor is one that supports you during this process. You feel safe, comfortable, and with ample trust.

3. Ask Questions When You Are Stuck

One way to get the most out of counseling is to ask your counselor questions when you are stuck or when you do not have the answer to something. For instance, if your counselor is providing you with feedback on how to address an issue and you do not truly know what to do. Please use this time to share with your counselor that you are a bit stuck and not sure what to do next. Trust me, your counselor will want to know this.

4. Be ready to change and show up

You can get the most out of counseling when you make the internal decision and commitment to fully show up with a willingness to change. Showing up means that you are willing to listen, receive feedback, and share your story with honesty. Change means that you are willing to hold vulnerability and accountability while working on transitioning to healthy and positive habits and behaviors.
