Who Can Benefit from Bilingual Therapy?
As the co-founder of Santos Counseling, my story is deeply tied to the work we do today. I’m a first-generation immigrant and the first in my family to graduate from college. I know what it’s like to grow up translating for your parents, navigating two cultures, and trying to find space to succeed in spaces that don’t always understand your background.
I guess looking back, much of my experiences paved the way to where I am today and nudge me to where I hope to be tomorrow. My experience shaped my mission — to create a mental health practice that is inclusive, culturally affirming, and accessible to the communities that are often underserved.
Bilingual therapy is especially helpful for:
-
Spanish-speaking adults and families
-
First-generation children of immigrants navigating dual identity
-
Immigrant and refugee clients processing trauma and acculturation.
-
Bilingual couples or families who want therapy that respects both languages and cultures.
-
Parents who want a counselor that can communicate directly with them in Spanish.
Language Is More Than Words
I find that when I sit with my clients we connect in many languages. Some are formed in words while others in gestures. For many individuals and families, speaking in their native language is a vital part of self-expression. For me, there are unique moments that I get to share in therapy. Such as, when a person digs for a word and then finally says it in their native language. In this moment, they experience a mixture of relief and understanding.
When you get to work with a counselor that speaks your language, it can allow you to tie emotions, memories, and personal experiences more effectively. When therapy takes place in your first language, you’re more likely to:
-
Express emotions fully without struggling to “translate” feelings or thoughts.
-
Share personal or cultural experiences more clearly and without the pressure to get it right.
-
Feel seen and heard on a deeper emotional and cultural level.

What Makes Therapy Effective?
