Client-Friendly Tips: Real-World Ways to Cope

1. Name What You’re Feeling 

Sign: You’re successful on the outside and inside you feel numb, exhausted, or emotionally flat.

Real-Life Example: You find yourself feeling confident and successful during the week. This feeling comes when you reach your work goals. At the end of the week, you find yourself feeling nothing as you move into the weekend. You feel stuck, numb, flat, and unsure of what to do. 

What to Try: A helpful exercise can include using a thought journal. You can use the journal to write down what you are feeling and break the cycle. For instance, you could write, “I’m functioning, but I feel like something is off.” Naming it helps break the cycle of hiding or dismissing your emotional state.

2. Create a “No-Extra” Zone

Sign: You keep saying “yes” to others. To friends, peers, and to just about anyone. Even when you’re running on empty.

Real-Life Example: Your peer at work comes to you and says, “Can you take on this extra task”? Inside you feel like you need to say yes because you see yourself as the dependable one. The one that takes on extra shifts, helping others, and always saying yes. Even when you are running on empty.

What to Try: A wonderful exercise to practice, is saying “no”. This week try saying, “I’d love to help, but I don’t have the bandwidth this week.” Implementing this one boundary can feel like a breath of fresh air.
