Education & Background
L.J. brings a unique combination of experience in education, community health, and mental health counseling to his work at Santos Counseling.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Spanish from La Salle University, a Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Master of Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Before becoming a therapist, L.J. taught third and fourth grade in Guilford County Schools, where he witnessed how family challenges, cultural differences, and life experiences can affect a child’s emotional well-being. His work with Mustard Seed Community Health and the Kellin Foundation further strengthened his passion for helping individuals and families navigate trauma, grief, and life’s challenges.
As a bilingual English- and Spanish-speaking therapist, L.J. brings both professional experience and cultural understanding to his work with children, teens, adults, and families.
Clinical Approach
L.J. believes that meaningful healing begins when you feel genuinely heard, understood, and accepted.
His approach to counseling is compassionate, collaborative, and trauma-informed. He recognizes that each person’s experiences, relationships, family history, and cultural background play an important role in their emotional well-being.
As a clinician certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), L.J. incorporates evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)-informed techniques, to help clients better understand their emotions, develop healthier coping skills, and strengthen relationships.
Whether he’s supporting a child experiencing anxiety, an adult processing past trauma, or a family navigating difficult changes, L.J. works to create a welcoming space where clients can explore challenges at their own pace and build confidence in their ability to move forward.
A Little More About L.J.
Outside the counseling room, L.J. enjoys exploring the world through books, food, music, and photography.
He’s a fan of witchy books, loves cooking international dishes, and enjoys attending concerts and experiencing live music. Traveling and discovering new places are also among his favorite ways to recharge and connect with different cultures.
When he’s not exploring a new recipe or capturing moments through photography, you’ll likely find him spending quality time with family, friends, and his two cats. L.J. values curiosity, creativity, and meaningful connections, qualities that also influence the welcoming and genuine atmosphere he strives to create in counseling.
