Navigating Your Trust Issues in a Relationship
How do you trust your partner?
Trust is a tough subject because there is so much ingrained in trust. Trust starts in your heart. Then, it will open up to the other person in your relationship. Overcoming trust issues in your relationship is not an easy task. It requires a massive mindset shift and overcoming mental obstacles. Trust can be built, destroyed, and rebuilt, which reminds of an ultra-popular song by Queen B herself.
Have you heard the song Sandcastles by Beyoncé? She spends time and energy, building a fantastic sandcastle. Minutes later, it just gets washed away by the incoming tide. How would that make you feel? At first, you may feel angry because all this really great work that you did is gone.
At this moment, you have a few options:
- Walk away.
- Rebuild the sandcastle.
This metaphor absolutely applies to relationships. When trust gets wiped away, it can only take a few minutes or even seconds. Years of building trust can vanish in just a blink of an eye. What are you going to do about it? Are you going to walk away, or are you going to rebuild that trust with your partner?
Trust requires accountability work from both sides. The person who wants to trust their partner needs to open up the door and try. Trust requires a work ethic. Both sides of the pair need to work at it continuously.
If your partner does some massive act of kindness that makes you trust them more, it’s easy to remember that. However, what are the little actions of trust that happen throughout the day? If you ask your partner to pack your lunch for you, that’s you trusting your partner. If you text a question and your partner replies back, that’s you trusting your partner to respond.
An activity to try:
Trust has to do with one person opening up the door and letting specific actions take place. Here’s an activity that you can do each day revolving around trust in your relationship: write down all the ways that your partner provided you with trust. For instance, did you ask your partner to pick you up for work? They will provide you trust by being accountable and showing up. Each day, you can rebuild trust.
Look at your relationship as a building process. Instead of looking at all the ways that you have failed in a relationship – think of the bright side. When you fall, you have to get back up with different eyes. Give yourself kindness. When it comes to trust, work to pick up the pieces. Think of the ways that you can be modified and better. Utilize the knowledge, skills, and experiences to move forward and construct your life in a way that you want it to be.
